Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ (Hours per Week × Weeks per Year)

The standard US baseline is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours per year. That is where the common rule of thumb comes from: divide your annual salary by 2,080 to get a rough hourly rate.

Working through a real example:

If you work 45 hours instead, change the input — $75,000 ÷ (45 × 52) = $32.05/hour. The extra hours are costing you $4/hour in effective pay, which adds up to roughly $7,500/year in unpaid time.
